Built during the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King

Today, Château Forge du Roy is considered the most important building of its kind in the entire Périgord region.

According to regional archives, this charterhouse dates back to around 1680 and was originally built as a hunting lodge for gentlemen.
In 1701, it was owned by the Marquis de Fleurac, Lord of Rouffignac, and became a master iron workshop around 1730, producing large iron cauldrons for sugar reduction in the French Caribbean and cannons for Napoleon’s army.
The lake adjacent to the Forge was created to provide a reliable water source for the forges.
By the late 19th century, the Forge had ceased iron production.
